Rohde & Schwarz satser på oscilloskoper

Rohde & Schwarz har netop annonceret deres entre på oscilloskopmarkedet med to nye produktfamililer, der inkluderer flere innovative nyheder (in english).

Rohde & Schwarz is launching two new product families that will position the company as an oscilloscope vendor in the global marketplace. With this move, the company is expanding its already extensive portfolio of test and measurement equipment.

- Our customers expect us to offer a complete line of products, and that includes oscilloscopes. To meet this demand, we are introducing a total of six new products of which we are extremely proud, says President and CEO Michael Vohrer.

The new oscilloscope families are build on the etablished, strong expertise at Rohde & Schwarz, where analog and digital integration, software and hardware development, as well as production are all carried out in-house. The outcome according to Rohde & Schwarz is oscilloscopes with the highest active signal acquisition rate on the market today, the first purely digital trigger system, and touch-screen operation for ease of use.

The oscilloscope market has been stable for decades and is continuously growing.
- Oscilloscopes are needed throughout the electronics industry. We are looking at a global market volume of around one billion dollars, explains Michael Vohrer.

To optimally address customer requirements, Rohde & Schwarz is starting out with two new product families and a total of six instruments. The R&S RTO family, comprising oscilloscopes with bandwidths of 1 GHz and 2 GHz, is aimed at the high-performance segment.

- Our focus here is on high speed and optimum signal fidelity – two hugely important factors in real-life applications, explains Josef Wolf, Director of the Oscilloscopes Subdivision.

- These characteristics, combined with our groundbreaking touch-screen interface for ease of use, enables users to accomplish even complex test and measurement tasks in a minimum of time. The R&S RTM family is intended for universal applications wherever electrical signals need to be measured. In research, in schools or in hobbyist labs – everyone needs oscilloscopes, says Wolf.

When it comes to more basic oscilloscopes for bandwidths up to 350 MHz, Rohde & Schwarz subsidiary Hameg Instruments, an established vendor with more than 50 years of experience in the field of budget oscilloscopes and measuring equipment, covers the needs of this market. Rohde & Schwarz acquired the company in 2005 with the aim of targeting new customers in the lower price segment. In early 2009, Hameg successfully expanded its product portfolio, introducing digital oscilloscopes in the frequency range up to 350 MHz.

The RTO productline

From a user perspective, the crucial qualities for an oscilloscope are the speed with which it detects errors and the accuracy with which it displays waveforms. This is why Rohde & Schwarz has designed and engineered its new R&S RTO family of oscilloscopes for speed and signal fidelity. Capable of analyzing one million waveforms per second, these scopes make even the rarest errors visible in an instant.

They also feature the first digital trigger system to be implemented in an oscilloscope, which minimizes trigger jitter. Their completely rethought user interface provides the perfect overview, even in the case of complex measurements. The new oscilloscopes will initially be available in two- and four-channel models with bandwidths of 1 GHz and 2 GHz and a maximum sampling rate of 10 Gsample per second.

Conventional oscilloscopes capture signals at only 0.5 percent of the acquisition cycle. They spend most of their time storing, processing and displaying data while any errors occurring in the meantime go undetected. To address this issue, Rohde & Schwarz has increased the acquisition time by a factor of 20, raising it to 10 percent.

A special ASIC achieves realtime processing of the digital measurement values at an unprecedented rate. As a result, the new scopes can analyze one million waveforms per second. Even with this high acquisition rate, all of the setting options and analysis functions remain available without reducing the measurement speed.

Rohde & Schwarz has also taken a new approach with the trigger system. Conventional analog trigger systems struggle with the time and amplitude offset between the analog trigger path and the digital signal acquisition path. This limits the instrument’s accuracy. With the purely digital trigger architecture implemented for the first time in the new scopes, the trigger and the captured data share a common signal path and a common time base.

The result is exceptionally low trigger jitter and exact assignment of the trigger to the signal. In addition, the digital trigger rearms immediately after a trigger event. The rearming delay that is typical of analog triggers is eliminated so that signal faults do not go undetected.

The single-core A/D converter in the R&S RTO scopes also helps to ensure high accuracy. It operates at a rate of 10 Gsample per second. The traditional approach to achieving such high conversion speeds is to use several slower A/D converters operating in parallel with time offset. Because behavior is not always absolutely consistent from one A/D converter to the next, mismatch can occur. By contrast, the Rohde & Schwarz 8-bit converter with more than seven effective bits achieves very high dynamic range. The result is minimal signal distortion and low inherent noise.

The Rohde & Schwarz oscilloscopes feature touch-screen operation that redefines ease of use. With semitransparent dialog boxes, movable measurement windows, configurable toolbar, and preview icons with live waveforms, users can accomplish even complex measurement tasks quickly and efficiently. With its 10.4-inch touch screen, the instrument strikes the right balance between usability and portability.

Rohde & Schwarz also offers a range of active and passive probes. The active probes not only have outstanding measurement properties, they also incorporate two new features: the micro button, which can be assigned a number of different functions to control the scope directly; and the Probes, a built-in voltmeter that enables precise DC measurements for quick checks on supply voltages or operating points, regardless of the scope’s current channel settings.

The two- and four-channel models of the R&S RTO with bandwidths of 1 GHz and 2 GHz plus a matching range of active and passive probes are now available from Rohde & Schwarz.

The RTM productline

The R&S RTM universal oscilloscopes are aimed at everyday measurement tasks. With 500 MHz bandwidth, 5 Gsample per second, and a memory depth of up to 8 Msample, these compact instruments have excellent characteristics. They can perform a wide range of functions making them ideal for testing and debugging analog and digital circuits with low clock rates.

Features such as very low inherent noise and full bandwidth even at maximum sensitivity ensure high signal fidelity and reliable results. To enable users to fully concentrate on their T&M tasks, the R&S RTM oscilloscopes offer maximum operating convenience: color-coded control elements, flat menu structures and a brilliant 8.4-inch XGA TFT color display. In addition, they feature compact, space-saving design and are among the smallest and lightest instruments in their class.

The R&S RTM universal oscilloscopes offers accurate signal display, excellent time resolution even for long sequences, and tools for fast signal analysis and great ease of use. The extremely low-noise frontends and a low-noise A/D converter enable users to precisely measure even the smallest vertical resolutions. The R&S RTM provides maximum input sensitivity of 1 mV/div without any bandwidth limitations or software-based zooming, resulting in excellent vertical resolution.

A primary focus of development was the suitability of the R&S RTM universal oscilloscopes for everyday use. Thanks to color-coded control elements, flat menu structures and keys for frequently used functions, the instruments are particularly easy and quick to operate. The brilliant, sharp, high-resolution 8.4-inch display makes even the smallest signal details visible. Analysis tools that support the detailed evaluation of signals are easy to access.

At the push of a button, the QuickMeas function displays the key measurement values for a currently active signal on the waveform, including positive and negative peak voltage, rise and fall time and mean voltage. The measurement values are updated continuously. Zoom function, event markers, cursor-based measurement functions, FFT function, mask tests and temperature colors facilitate troubleshooting.

In addition to top measurement characteristics, the active probes feature two innovations. One is the micro button on the probe, which can be assigned various functions for direct control of the oscilloscope. The other is the Probes, a built-in voltmeter that enables precise DC voltage measurements, e.g. for quickly checking supply voltages or operating points, regardless of the channel settings on the base unit.

The R&S RTM in two- and four-channel models with 500 MHz bandwidth plus a matching range of active and passive probes are now available from Rohde & Schwarz.
